Oliver Weld Noble Thacher |
- Oliver Weld Noble Thacher is the eldest son of Oliver Noble Thacher and Hannah L Ayers/Ayres of Philadelphia.
According to his record in the Pacific Branch of the Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Oliver enlisted on 24 Aug 1863 in Philadelphia with the rank of Private in the U.S. Marine Corps (Civil War, Union side). He served as a naval marine officer, mostly assigned to the naval stockyards, and was honorably discharged on 30 Aug 1867 in Philadelphia.
In 1869 Oliver made his way west, finally settling around 1873 on 160 acres of land in South Fork, Kern County, CA where he became a successful grocer merchant and made a name for himself as one of the founding pioneers in the area.
Oliver married German-born Bertha Switzer (maiden name Oldorff/Olldorf) in Sawtelle, CA on 9 Apr 1877. She had been previously married to a Mr. Switzer, most likely in the Arizona Territory as that is where their 3 children were born.
In the 1810 census in Kernville, Oliver and Bertha have 4 children in their household, including Bertha's 3 girls: Mary (8); Louiza (7); Annie (4) and Oliver (2).
In the 1900 Oliver is age 58 and Bertha 48 with 5 of their own children: Oliver N ("Ollie"), age 19; Frederick (Plummer), age 17; David A(yers), age 15; Alice E(llen), age 13; and Mabel H(anna), age 10.
By 1905 Oliver and Bertha had moved to Sawtelle where Oliver, who suffered from deafness, spent time in the Sawtelle Home for Disabled Veterans. By 1910 they were living in Malibu.
Oliver died in Lynn Haven, FL and is buried in Sawtelle, CA. His record in the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Sawtelle does not indicate that he was buried in the National Cemetery, and research into online burial records of the Cemetery does not yield his name. However, chances are he was buried there as was his younger brother Alfred Ayers Thacher, a career marine.
