94 old-time resident of Ojai died in Orinda Calif. Aug. 28 1997.
He was the oldest son of Sherman Day Thacher and Aliza Blake Thacher of Ojai.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Helena Duryea Thacher of Orinda; sisters Harriet Thacher Herrick and Helen Thacher Griggs both of Ojai; sons Philip D. Thacher of Albuquerque John H. Thacher of Ojai and grandchildren Peter H. Thacher of Savannah Sherman H. Thacher of Los Gatos Nara S. Thacher of Albuquerque Jeffrey D. Thacher of Charlottesville and Thomas B. Thacher of Annapolis.
Mr. Thacher attended local schools: Dean School in Santa Barbara San Antonio School and Thacher School in Ojai before attending the Taft School. He earned a Ph.D. in math and physics from Yale in 1925 and a B.S. in engineering from MIT in 1927. Mr. Thacher pursued his life-long interest in civil engineering and was resident engineer at numerous hydro-electric projects on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevadas from Shasta County to Kings county during his 25-year employment with PG & E. Upon retiring he ran the family quarry products company Blake Brothers in Richmond Calif. for several years. After again retiring he was asked to be the consulting engineer for a nearby Bay area rapid transit tunnel.
Until his death he continued to be a member of and interested in several professional civil engineering societies as well as E Campus Vitus and the Society of California Pioneers.
Mr. and Mrs. Thacher were inveterate travelers to out-of-the-way areas on all continents.
