      David Cunningham Thatcher was an orphan at an early age; he was a merchant and planner of bridges and tunnels, he and W. B. Ogden planned the first swing bridge in Chicago, Illinois and made plans for tunnels under the Chicago river. He died April 1869, a train was used in his funeral to Thatcher's station.
