  • Name Donald Thacher Welch 
    • Donald Thacher Welch, 76, of Marblehead died Sunday, Aug. 10, in his Marblehead home after a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Martha (Pierce) Welch, with whom he recently celebrated 50 years of marriage.

      A lifelong resident of Marblehead, he was born on June 8, 1927, the son of the late Dr. C. [Charles] Ralph and Ruth (Savage) Welch. He attended Marblehead public schools and graduated from Marblehead High School, class of 1945.

      Shortly after his graduation, Mr. Welch enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November of 1945. He served as corpsman for several hospitals on the West Coast. In 1947, he was honorably discharged and returned to Marblehead.

      Mr. Welch was employed for over 32 years by the U.S. Postal Service. He worked at the Marblehead Post Office as both a sales and service associate and as a longtime letter carrier until his retirement in 1989.

      Mr. Welch was a member and past master of the Philanthropic Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Marblehead. He was a past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Marblehead chapter, a member of the Gerry 5 in Marblehead, and was an adviser for the Rainbow Girls of Swampscott.

      Mr. Welch was also an avid reader and a history buff. He enjoyed books by Robert Parker and all books on history, especially those on the Civil War. He will also be remembered as a role model by his family for the courage and bravery he displayed over the past year while battling cancer.

      In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five children, Karen F. Welch of Saco, Maine; Donald T. Welch Jr. and his wife Janice of Marblehead; John P. Welch and his wife Sally of North Yarmouth, Maine; Elizabeth J. Ohlhorst and her husband Gary of Pace, Fla.; and Gregory A. Welch and his wife Jeanne of Marblehead. He also leaves seven grandchildren, Alexander J., Benjamin J. and Carly J. Coffin, all of Maine; Michael P. Welch of Beverly; and Amanda L., Gregory A. and Brian T. Welch, all of Marblehead. He was the brother of the late Ralph and Parker Welch.

      Services were held Aug. 13. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Shore Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Drive, Peabody, MA 01960.
