Deceased Name: Helen Thacher Crowell Angell
SOUTH DENNIS - Helen Thacher Crowell Angell passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, R.I., after a brief illness, surrounded by her loved ones.

Born in South Dennis to Josephine Leach and Edward E. Crowell, Helen was very fond of her deep ties to the Cape, with ancestors who were among the first settlers of Dennis and Yarmouth, including John Crowe, Thomas Howes, and Anthony Thacher.

Helen dearly loved her brother, Edward A. Crowell of West Barnstable, her late sister, Jean (Mrs. Richard) Dunham of South Dennis, her late brother, Robert E. Crowell of South Dennis, and her many nieces and nephews.

Helen was the widow of the late William C. Angell of South Dennis. She is survived by her first husband and the father of her children, Lester D. Hatch of Harwich Port.

Helen was a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and earned her degree as a registered nurse at the Somerville Hospital during World War II. She was proud of her work at Providence Lying-In Hospital, Boston City Hospital, Quincy City Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital. She enjoyed teaching and was an instructor for nurses' aides at the Centerville Nursing home, Cape Cod Hospital and Cape Cod Community College. After retiring, she managed the Hospice Thrift Shop in Barnstable Village for many years, and much enjoyed the friendship of the other volunteers.

Helen was a member of Dennis Historical Society, the Old South Dennis Village Association, and the Mayflower Society. She founded the Cape Cod Postcard Collectors Club in 1986, and much enjoyed the club's meetings, presentations, and fairs. She could never resist searching through old drawers and dusty boxes for cards of special interest.

Helen enjoyed nature, music and dancing, and her home and gardens on Bass River. She enjoyed contact with her many friends from the Cape and beyond, including old and dear friends from nursing school and from time spent while living in Cincinnati, Ohio. In recent years, she enjoyed the friendship of her grade-school classmate and companion, Herbert "Red" Chase.

She will be remembered for her warm heart, beautiful smile and great sense of humor. Her generous nature will be missed by all, except by those whom she regularly beat at playing cards. Helen had a special fondness for dogs, most recently her yellow Labs, Haley and Hallie Berry.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA, or to the Women and Infants Hospital, Providence, R.I., from which she recently received skilled and compassionate care from an outstanding medical team.
