    • Leatha “Jane” Thacher, 99, of the Madison in Fort Madison, formerly of Donnellson, Willmington, North Carolina and Burlington, passed away at 4:15 A.M. Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the Madison in Fort Madison, Iowa.

      Born January 11, 1916 at Montrose, Iowa the daughter of Lloyd and Cora (Hamilton) Harman. On November 25, 1935 at Fort Madison, Iowa she married Howard Thacher. He preceded her in death on November 13, 1993.

      She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two grandsons: Emmett St. Clair and Terry Thacher, one brother Frank Harman, four sisters: Hazel Koehler, Edna Ruble, Pearl Tweedy and Alta Bangert.

      After graduating from Montrose High School in 1934, she attended summer school at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. She then began teaching that fall at Liberty School near Montrose. She then went onto teach a total of 31 years including the rural schools of Columbia, Franklin, Warren, Ashland and Fairview. When the one room schools were closed, she ended her career teaching third grade at Donnellson until her retirement in 1981. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1963.

      Leatha lived in Wilmington, North Carolina from 1993 until moving back to Iowa in 2012. She was active at the Senior Center, the Pine Valley Baptist Church and continued to garden, knit and crochet while in North Carolina.

      She was a member of the Oak Street Baptist Church in Burlington, Iowa, the Retired Teachers Association and the Iowa Wesleyan Alumni Association. She was very active and healthy until she suffered a stroke on May 24, 2015. Leatha was an avid gardener, quilter and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She was actively making between three and five baby and child sized caps each week to give to those who needed them.
